What are the guidelines?

Safe Work Australia has clear guidelines regarding the obligations of employers to identify and manage the risks of asbestos exposure. Workers may be exposed to asbestos through:

  • Asbestos removal and demolition work in buildings, power stations, boilers and ships (and subsequent disposal of the asbestos).
  • Maintenance workers like electricians, computer cabling installers and air-conditioning installers working in ceiling spaces of buildings where sprayed asbestos has not been removed, sealed or encapsulated.

Employers with workers exposed to asbestos are required by law to have an adequate control plan in place. Controls are divided into two categories:

  1. Minimising exposures: for example, complying with asbestos handling and disposal protocols, using local exhaust ventilation, using asbestos vacuums with HEPA filters, negative-pressure decontamination, laundering uniforms, and using PPE.
  2. Worker health monitoring: an asbestos medical, including respiratory questionnaires, respiratory (lung) function tests, a chest X-ray (sometimes), and a medical examination.

People working with asbestos should complete a health monitoring assessment before starting at-risk work and again biannually if they remain in an at-risk role.
